Act 2, Scene 12 – “The jolly tale of their courtship.”

Hermia-page-001Notes on Hermia and Lysander

Hermia and Lysander take a little stroll down memory lane this week, recounting the jolly tale of their courtship. For all the joyousness of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, it’s easy to forget that the opening scene is really dark. Egeus is inches from having his daughter put to death. Japes!

These guys were a bit of a roundabout nut to crack. Hermia’s curls went through various different shapes, and I’m not sure I ever had a specific idea in my head for what Lysander should look like, but I quite like his square-jawed, 1950s teen movie hero appearance. Hermia is no doubt standing in front of the big letter stitched on the breast of his doublet.
